Estate Agents Ban: Report  Erring Practitioners To IMBLN – Registrar

The Institute of Mortgage Brokers and Lenders in Nigeria (IMBLN) has stated that Ebonyi State Government or any other state in the country has no authority to ban Estate/Mortgage agents.

The Registrar/CEO of the Institute, Dr Jasper Adeleye in a statement issued on Wednesday noted that IMBLN appreciates the genuine concern of Governor, Francis Nwifuru on sharp practices of unlicensed estate/mortgage practitioners.

According to Adeleye, Governor Nwifuru’s action was premised on sharp practices/unprofessional conduct of unlicensed practitioners in the Estate/Mortgage industry. The Institute of Mortgage Brokers and Lenders is deeply worried with the development in Ebonyi State. The action of Governor Nwifuru further justifies the need to sanitize the Mortgage/Estate industry.

His words: “The Institute of Mortgage Brokers and Lenders of Nigeria (IMBLN) is Nigeria’s leading professional body dedicated to raising standards in the mortgage, real estate, and financial sectors. IMBLN provides rigorous certification programs and sets the ethical benchmarks required for professionals to drive sustainable housing development across Nigeria. As the foremost authority in the industry, IMBLN is empowered by an Act of the National Assembly. The right thing to do is to work with existing laws. The state government cannot ban estate agents, only IMBLN is empowered by law to sanction erring practitioners.”

Adeleye urged Estate/Mortgage Practitioners to adhere to international best practices and avoid actions that can put the industry in bad light. He revealed the institute will commence full enforcement to flush out unlicensed agents from January 2026, thereby advised Nigerians not to patronise unregistered agents in their own interest.

IMBLN Registrar also implored government agencies such as ICPC to partner with Institute of Mortgage Brokers and Lenders in its bid to sanitise the real estate sector and weed off the fake estate developers.
