Full Appreciation Message
Two days ago, specifically on May 8, 2025, I joyfully bagged a PhD in Conflict Transformation and Peace Studies at the graduation ceremony at the prestigious University of KwaZulu-Natal in Westville, South Africa, signifying the completion of a transformational academic journey in the novel Peace Studies.
My accomplishment is not only mine; it reflects the steadfast support, direction, and affection of those who accompanied me on my journey. To my outstanding supervisor, Professor Dorcas Ettang, now the Director of the International Centre on Nonviolence at Durban University of Technology: Your extensive knowledge of social research, careful attention to detail, and calm but constructive comments were the foundations of my academic trajectory. Your guidance was both educational and motivational. I could not have desired a superior mentor during this demanding exercise. For three years, you drilled, refined and grilled me to bring out the best in me. I passed through you and became a better researcher, a better teacher, and a better supervisor to my students at Osun State University, Osogbo, Nigeria.
Consequently, I extend my sincere gratitude to the University of KwaZulu-Natal for the scholarship that facilitated this academic endeavour. Your investment in my education has enhanced my life and enabled me to make significant contributions to the field of peace studies.
I cannot but appreciate Prof. Abdul-Jelil Animasawun, my Master’s thesis supervisor at the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin, Nigeria , whose first mentoring established the framework for my research competencies. Your guidance has sparked a love for inquiry that has sustained me to this milestone.
To my father, Mr Joseph Gbadeyan, your pleasure in having a PhD recipient in our family heritage brings me great delight. Your conviction in the significance of education has been a motivating factor in my life.
To my cherished wife, Oluwabukola, your patience, comprehension, and steadfast support have been my foundation. Your affection furnished the strength I required over the late evenings and extensive hours of research. To our children, Gold, Diamond, and our successor, Obamide, your smiles and embraces served as daily reminders of my aspirations. This accomplishment belongs to you as much as it does to me.
This achievement is dedicated to the cherished memory of my mother. While you are absent from this time, I sensed your presence throughout the journey. Your initial sacrifices, silent prayers, and steadfast faith in my potential established the groundwork for my journey. You instilled in me tenacity, humility, and the significance of education long before I could completely appreciate their value. This PhD belongs to both of us, and I dedicate it to your lasting love and remembrance. I hope I’ve made you proud, Maami!
As I flip over this page in the book of my life, I advance with the teachings, affection, and support that have led me to this point. Let us embrace the forthcoming chapter dedicated to effecting change via peace and transformation.
