GSS Ilorin: The Decline of a Citadel
Once a shining example of academic excellence, Government Secondary School, Ilorin (GSS), has lost its luster. This esteemed institution, renowned for producing high-caliber individuals, now struggles with dilapidated infrastructure, inadequate facilities, and poor management.

A Shocking Reality
A recent tour of the facilities revealed:
› Uninhabitable hostels
› Non-existent dining halls
› Outdated laboratories
› Crumbling classrooms
› Inadequate lockers and chairs
›Lack of Perimeter Fence
› Lack of beds, mattresses, doors, and windows
Poor security system
Unkept atmosphere
Poor management of the facilities
The once-thriving environment has become a shadow of its former self, posing serious safety concerns for students.
Exchange Students: A Neglected Responsibility
Lack of proper management and monitoring of students has resulted to many Exchange students working as labourer with the construction company presently occupy the school premises. The whole atmosphere in the school is an eye sore.
The whole frontage part of the school fence is covered by weeds as at the time of visiting the school.
Failed Management
Despite significant investments from old boys, the recent intervention by the present administration, and other stakeholders, the poor management style has exacerbated the decline.
A Call to Action
We urge the state government to:
1. Suspend the student exchange program until habitable hostels and adequate facilities are established.
2. Investigate and address the mismanagement of funds in the school.
3.
3. Provide necessary infrastructure and resources.
4. Ensure student safety.
5. Post competent Principal who can manage better the school.
*Pictorial and Video Evidence*
*A Plea from a Concerned Old Boy*
As someone who has experienced the school’s former glory, I implore the state government to intervene. GSS’s motto, “GSS is great! I will make it greater, we shall make it greatest,” rings hollow unless collective action is taken.
Government Secondary School, Ilorin, requires immediate attention. We call on the government, old boys, and stakeholders to rescue this iconic institution from its downward spiral.
