Kano Government Settles N2.5bn Bills for 84 Medical Students in Cyprus
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has secured the release of academic certificates for 84 medical students of the state after settling an outstanding debt of €1.4 million (approximately ₦2.5 billion) owed to Near East University in Cyprus.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Information, Ibrahim Adam, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Kano.
According to the statement, the governor travelled to Lefkosia, Cyprus, on December 9, 2024, where he met with the management of Near East University and negotiated the release of certificates for the affected students.
Adam said the students, who graduated between 2015 and 2019, had been unable to collect their certificates due to the previous administration’s failure to meet the university’s financial obligations.
He noted that most of the affected students studied critical courses such as Medicine and Nursing, and had been stranded for years without their credentials.
Adam said the certificates would be handed over to the Kano State Scholarship Board through the Nigerian Ambassador to Turkey for onward delivery to the students.
Governor Yusuf was quoted in the statement as saying the situation had been a major setback for the students and the state, which is in need of qualified professionals in the health sector.
“This has hindered the dreams of our children and delayed their contributions to our development,” Yusuf said.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to education and youth empowerment as a foundation for Kano’s progress.
Adam described the resolution as a major milestone that has restored hope to many families and strengthened the government’s drive to fix challenges in the education sector.
