Kwara Development Group Condemns Suspension of Dickalo From Football Activities
The President of the Kwara Development Group, Mr. Olaide Ahli, has condemned the recent suspension of Architect Olabunmi Dickalo by the Kwara State Football Association (KWSFA), describing the decision as an overreach and a violation of FIFA statutes.
Architect Dickalo, Chairman of the Super Eagles Supporters Club (Kwara State Chapter) and Dickalo Football Academy, was suspended for organizing a novelty match without prior clearance and approval from KWSFA. The FA also alleged that Dickalo failed to respond to disciplinary committee invitations.
However, critics argue that the FA’s action lacks legal backing, as neither FIFA statutes nor the Kwara FA’s own rules explicitly mandate approvals for novelty or unorganized matches.
Adding to the controversy, the FA Chairman, Idris Musa Abdullahi Thuraya, reportedly refused to present a medal to Architect Dickalo during the final ceremony of the “Offa Preseason Tournament.” This public act of rejection, witnessed by spectators and stakeholders, has been criticized as a socioculturally inappropriate gesture, escalating tensions between the parties.
“In our culture, leaders are expected to act with dignity and respect, even in conflict situations. Publicly disgracing an individual, particularly someone who has contributed significantly to football development in Kwara State, is not only unacceptable but undermines the unity needed in the football community,” Mr. Ahli stated.
Critics argue that this incident, coupled with the suspension, reflects poorly on the FA’s leadership and could alienate stakeholders and sponsors who prioritize respect and professionalism.
The Letter from KWSFA
The suspension was communicated through a letter addressed to Architect Olabunmi Komolafe, dated 11th September 2024. The letter read:
ORGANISING FOOTBALL MATCH WITHOUT CLEARANCE AND APPROVAL
With reference to my several letters on the above subject matter, especially my last letter of 11th October 2024, you organized a football match without due clearance and approval from the Kwara State Football Association on Thursday, 7th November 2024, at the main bowl of Kwara State Stadium, Ilorin.
In view of the above, I am directed to inform you that for such action, you are suspended from football activities pending when you face the disciplinary committee of the Football Association and absolve yourself of any complicity in this act.
Controversy Over Legal Grounds
Mr. Ahli argued that the KWSFA’s decision contradicts FIFA statutes, which define the FA’s authority as limited to overseeing Association Football under the Laws of the Game. He pointed out that novelty matches, like the one organized by Dickalo to honor the Flying Eagles U-20 head coach, fall outside the FA’s jurisdiction.
“There is no provision in FIFA regulations or the Kwara FA statute that mandates FA control or approval for novelty matches or unorganized football activities. By enforcing such non-existent rules, the FA risks sanctions for contradicting FIFA principles,” Ahli remarked.
Call for Action and Resolution
Mr. Ahli has urged the FA to rescind the suspension and issue a public apology to Architect Dickalo. He emphasized that the FA must prioritize respect, inclusivity, and proper governance in its dealings with stakeholders.
“Leadership requires fairness, accountability, and mutual respect. The FA should focus on its core mandate and avoid creating unnecessary controversies that hinder football development in Kwara State,” Ahli added.
Stakeholders React
This incident has ignited widespread criticism within Kwara’s football community, with many stakeholders calling for the FA to address its approach to governance and jurisdiction. They argue that restoring harmony and professionalism in football administration is vital for sustained progress in the sport.
The football community awaits the FA’s response to these concerns, hoping for a resolution that upholds the values of unity, fairness, and development in Kwara State football.
