LG Elections: Oyo Assembly Pledges Support For OYSIEC
Oyo State House of Assembly has assured the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) of necessary support in the next local government council election.
The Chairman, House Committee on Local Government , Chieftaincy Matters and State Honours , Hon .Akintunde Olajide gave the assurance during the interactive session between members of the committee and the OYSIEC team on the release of the 2024 notice of election and timetable by the commission, held at the Assembly Caucus Room, Ibadan.
He emphasized the need to bridge the communication gap between the assembly and OYSIEC members; hence, there is a need to work hand in hand for the success of the poll.
The committee chairman, thereafter implored all political parties in the state to participate in the election so as to have democratically elected chairmen at the councils, as stated by the Constitution of the country.
His words: “I want to appreciate the OYSIEC Chairman and his team for complying with the provisions of the law. The commission has taken a giant step with the release of the 2024 election timetable.
“We assured you of our cooperation and support, especially in the areas of rules and regulations guiding your conduct, amendment of laws, and any other areas, so as to enable you to perform your functions more diligently.
We want you to build confidence in our people so that all political parties will participate in the election.”
Earlier in his remarks, the OYSIEC Chairman, Aare Isiaka Abiola Olagunju, SAN, revealed that prompt release of notice of election and timetable by the commission conforms with Section 28 of the 2022 electoral act, which says, notice should be made public 360 days ahead of election day.
Olagunju added that the decision will enable both the commission and political parties to prepare adequately and avert unforseen circumstances.
He explained that it is essential for the people of the state to get involved in local government administration by participating actively in local government council elections.
Olagunju,who assured political parties in the state of equal treatment in the forthcoming local government council elections, enjoined the parties to abide by the election guidelines and timetable released by the commission.
He also solicited for the support of the assembly members on the amendment of the OYSIEC law and the upcoming elections.
