Messi, Rojo Send Nigeria Out of Russia 2018
The Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to reach the knock-out stage of Russia 2018 World Cup after losing 2-1 to the La Albiceleste of Argentina in their Group D match.
Barcelona forward, Lionel Messi opened the score for coach Jorge Sampaoli’s side on the 14th minute to give the Argentines a 1-0 lead in halftime.
Victor Moses, however, rejuvenated the Super Eagles World Cup hopes in the second half after he converted a penalty on the 51 minute to make the game 1-1.
While the Super Eagles had thought they would qualify for the round of 16 ahead of the Argentines, Marcos Rojo shattered the hope of not only the players but Nigerian fans after he scored on the 86 minutes to end the game 2-1 in favour of Argentina.
Meanwhile, the win is Argentina’s fifth victory against Nigeria. Croatia and Argentina qualified for the round of 16 in Group D while the Super Eagles who finished third exited the World Cup alongside Iceland (4th position).
