Ogun Allocates 100 Hectares for Naval Base Construction
The Ogun State Government has finalized the allocation of 100 hectares of land in Ode-Omi, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, for the establishment of a Naval Base and Dockyard by the Nigerian Navy.
Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed this on Tuesday during a meeting with the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Mike Oamen, at his office in Abeokuta.
Governor Abiodun revealed that the state government has waived fees and charges amounting to billions of naira and has forwarded the Certificate of Occupancy to the Naval headquarters to facilitate the project.
“In view of prospective activities in our riverine areas, we identified the need for a Naval Base and Dockyard.
A committee was set up between the Nigerian Navy and the state government to select a suitable location, and we allocated a 100-hectare parcel of land in Ogun Waterside. The formalities are now complete, and we look forward to the groundbreaking ceremony,” the governor said.
Abiodun added that the access road to the site would be completed by the end of the week, noting that the rainy season had initially delayed progress.
The governor emphasized the importance of a Naval presence in Ogun State, citing the need for enhanced security and the state’s strategic location as a coastal region.
He highlighted the significance of Tongeji Island and the Olokola Deep Sea Port, both of which hold economic and security potential, particularly as Ogun aspires to become an oil-producing state.
Rear Admiral Oamen commended Governor Abiodun for supporting the Nigerian Navy and security agencies in the state.
He assured that the Navy would maintain a strong presence in Ogun’s waterways to ensure security and deter criminal activities.
“The Naval Base in Ogun is part of the Chief of Naval Staff’s plans, and work will commence soon.
The Navy remains committed to securing coastal states,” Oamen said.
The new Naval Base and Dockyard are expected to bolster security in Ogun’s maritime areas and support economic development in the region.
