Prof Sulaiman Says Deficiencies in Legislative Drafting Affecting State Houses of Assembly

The Director General National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies(NILDS), Prof Abubakar Sulaiman has described deficiencies in legislative drafting as one of the major challenges facing State Houses of Assembly in Nigeria.

Prof Abubakar Sulaiman disclosed this on Wednesday while speaking at Workshop organised on Legislative Practice and Procedures.

This workshop was organized by the Institute for members, management staff, committee clerks, and other support staff of state houses of assembly across Nigeria.

He highlighted other challenges to include weak institutional memory, limited autonomy, executive interference, and inadequate infrastructure and staff development.

The Director General emphasized that if these issues are not addressed, they will continue to undermine the legislature’s ability to effectively and independently fulfill its constitutional responsibilities.
