World Teachers’ Day: Governors Declare Monday Work-Free for Teachers
By Molayo Anjorin
The Kwara State Government has declared Monday a work-free day for teachers as Nigeria joins the world to mark the 2026 Teachers’ Day.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq gave this directive in a statement signed by his Deputy Chief Press Secretary, Mashood Agboola during the weekend in Ilorin.
According to him, this holiday will enable the teachers participate in the celebration of the yearly event.
The Governor used the occasion to acknowledge the teachers’ role in the development of human capital and pledged his determination to continue to labour for their welfare.
“His Excellency extends his best wishes to teachers across the length and breadth of the state whose contributions to human capital development are acknowledged at all times.”
AbdulRazaq reassured Teachers of his administration’s commitment to the welfare of the teachers and of every Kwaran.
In addition to Kwara, Oyo, Ekiti, Akwa Ibom and Ogun States have joined in by declaring Monday a working-free, teaching-free or school-closure day for teachers.
The arrangements, which may differ in each state, will allow teachers in these states to participate in programmes celebrating the day without the responsibilities of teaching.
The United Nations established World Teachers’ Day to raise awareness of the teaching profession and promote efforts to improve working conditions and attract more people to the teaching career.
Hence, as well as thanking teachers for the sacrifices they make to inspire and educate future generations, this year’s day also marks 60 years since the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.
