Atiku Has Constitutional Right To Contest 2027 Presidential Election- Sowunmi
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otunba Segun Sowunmi has stated that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has the constitutional right to contest 2027 Presidential election.
In an interview with Vanguard, Sowunmi stated that the decision to run for any political office is a constitutional right and should not be subject to undue pressure or intimidation.
“Whether any human being will contest any election is purely the rights granted to them by the constitution and according to the platforms of the party,” he said.
He argued that too much attention is being given to attempts to dissuade Atiku from running rather than focusing on strategies to win the general election.
“People are devoting too much time to trying to bully Atiku, who cannot be bullied,” Sowunmi added.
Sowunmi also emphasized that political parties, including the PDP, have the freedom to zone their presidential tickets in line with their constitutions but maintained that such arrangements should not infringe on individual rights to contest.
“What law would you use to prevent somebody from contesting an election when we have even created laws to say anybody who wants to contest is free to contest?” he queried.
Recalling Atiku’s past political efforts, Sowunmi noted that the former vice president had participated in both successful and unsuccessful primary elections.
He cautioned against attempts to deny aspirants their constitutional rights, urging stakeholders to allow a level playing field.
