The Federal Government has condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia’s King Khalid International Airport that killed 12 people and injured more than 300, calling for restraint and respect for international law.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued on Sunday, described the attack as a threat to civilian safety and regional stability, saying it violated Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and undermined efforts to promote peace in the Middle East.

“Nigeria considers this incident a dangerous escalation that flagrantly disregards civilian safety, violates the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and undermines ongoing efforts to promote peace, security, and stability in the Middle East,” the ministry’s spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, said.

The statement from Abuja comes as Riyadh faces further attacks. A projectile struck the airport on Sunday, triggering a fire in one of its passenger halls and leaving people injured, according to Saudi authorities.

The recent attacks have raised alarm about the safety of the airport, which handles millions of passengers a year, including Nigerians who travel to Saudi Arabia to participate in the annual Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage.

Nigeria urged all parties to exercise restraint to avoid further destabilizing the situation and threatening lives and vital infrastructure.

In solidarity with the Saudi government and people, Nigeria conveyed its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured, adding that it expressed its appreciation for the swift action taken by the Saudi authorities to address the situation.
