Lagos Assembly: Obasa Should Wait for Court Judgement- Group

Grassroots Network for Good Governance has implored former Speaker Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Mudashiru Obasa to allow court to decide his fate rather than creating unnecessary tension in the state.

The Group in a statement issued by its Convener, Afeez Mohammed noted that the attempt by Obasa to force way back to position of Lagos Assembly Speaker after filing case in court belittle his status.

Grassroots Network for Good Governance noted that Obasa was removed by 37 members of Lagos Assembly on January 13, 2025 inline with provisions of 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The statement read: “It’s surprising that an Aide of Hon Mudashiru Obasa during the weekend announced on Radio that the removed Speaker will resume duty on February 18, 2025. This followed by invasion of Lagos State House of Assembly by DSS officials on Monday suggesting that Obasa’s grandstanding might have backing of some influential personalities.

“We are aware that the member representing Agege Constituency 1 has filed lawsuit to challenge his removal in court. It’s therefore imperative to seek redress in court and avoid actions that disrupt the peace and tranquility in Lagos State.

“We therefore advise Hon Mudashiru Obasa to uphold democratic tenets and obey rule of law by waiting for court to decide his fate. He cannot result to self help at this moment. The position of Speaker is the first among equal. Hence, he is not bigger than 37 members that supported his removal as Speaker last month.

The Group also urged Security Agencies to provide support for current Lagos Assembly leadership to discharge their duties and responsibilities without unnecessary distractions.
