Recess: How Senator Oyelola Ashiru Spent Quality and Productive Time With Constituents

The Nigerian Senate after screening of the ministerial nominees, in July, commenced two months annual recess.

The legislative recess is an important part of the Senate calendar but some people see it as holiday period for senator and time to pay attention to their family as well as other personal matters.

However, the recess in the political and legislative process is the period to shape each year’s political direction. Therefore, legislative recess is not idle time for serious minded lawmakers but it is a time to create avenue to fraternalise, familiarize and bond with constituents they are representing.

To this end, Senator Oyelola Ashiru representing Kwara South Senatorial District has been using the recess productively by interacting and engaging constituents across the seven local government areas within his jurisdiction. Senator Ashiru during the recess met with various community stakeholders.

Furthermore, he met with the youths and different interest groups separately and he reiterates his commitment for youth development. The Senator also used the opportunity to get firsthand information, know their pressing needs and assure them of his unrelenting commitment to bring meaningful development to every community in Kwara South. During his meeting with the aged/senior citizens, Senator Ashiru promised to partner with National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by enrolling them in order to access quality healthcare at subsidized rate.

Similarly, the Offa born Senator also pledged to introduce sustainable empowerment programmes for youths and women. During the interaction with youths in Kwara South Senatorial District, Senator Oyelola Ashiru explained that his empowerment programmes/interventions will not be one-off or annual event but consistent and continuous efforts to meet yearning of his constituents.

Apart from that, Senator Ashiru is also supporting social and religious groups in his district. He recently donated Sienna Bus to Ibolo Muslim Community.

Just last week, he visited tourist sites in Kwara South with the view of showcasing them to the world and attracting federal government as well as private investors attention. Senator Ashiru who described himself as Chief marketer of Kwara South visited the first National Museum in Nigeria, Esie Museum, Owu Fall, Ero Omola Water Falls in Idofin Igbana and Imole-Boja Rock Shelter in Kajola. However, the deplorable and frightening state of Olla-Oro-Ago link Bridge truncates the Senator’s visit to Owu Fall.

Excitingly, he is proposing establishment of University of History and Archeology in Esie to preserve legacy of First National Museum in Nigeria and planning to lure investors to develop all the tourist sites across the senatorial district.

According to him, my visit to the tourist sites in Kwara South is to attract federal government, private investors and others in this district. There is need for federal government to establish a University of History and Archeology in Esie to preserve legacy of First National Museum in Nigeria. I will not only attract meaningful development to Kwara South but also project our rich cultural heritage to the world. We shall support annual cultural festival in Esie and other communities with special cultural activities.

Besides, the distinguished senator in line with his campaign promise to revamp agricultural activities and provide sustainable empowerment for the youths in the zone will be sponsoring seven youths on how to turn waste into wealth, particularly manure. The training will not only help his constituents who major in farming key into Agriculture initiative of President Muhammadu Buhari but create new entrepreneurs in Agro chemical industry and give farmers within Kwara South Senatorial district to buy manure at cheaper rate. The youths are drawn from the seven local government areas in the district will commence training on Tuesday September 24, 2019. The facilitators and trainers comprises Waste managers as well as Agrochemical professionals from United States and Ghana.

Interestingly, Senator Ashiru is changing narrative in the bid to provide quality representation for people of Kwara South by creating synergy with lawmakers within the district, this comprises two House of Representatives members and ten members of State House of Assembly. The Senator met the Kwara South lawmakers in September and they resolved to work together with the sole aim of fast tracking Kwara South development. This move is the first of its kind and sign of greater things coming to the people.

Without mincing words, the people of Ifelodun, Irepodun, Isin, Offa, Oyun, Ekiti and Oke-ero local government areas should be expectant as Senate resumes on September 24, 2019. Senator Oyelola Ashiru will begin to bring good fruits from the seed they sow by voting him during 2019 general elections.
