Rukayat Shittu’s Supporters Overwhelm Critics With Testimonies of Performance

Supporters of Hon. Rukayat Shittu have rallied behind the lawmaker following a recent social-media backlash, flooding the debate with testimonies of what they described as her strong legislative and constituency performance.

The development followed critical comments posted under one of Shittu’s social media posts, with some commentators reportedly threatening that the lawmaker would not return to the Kwara State House of Assembly.

The reaction, however, appeared to trigger a counter wave of support, as constituents and other supporters began publicly highlighting Shittu’s record in office.

One supporter, Abdullateef Olalekan Sikiru, described Shittu as “one of the best things” to have happened to Owode/Onire Constituency, Asa Local Government and Kwara State.

“We will not trade our gold for iron,” he said, describing the lawmaker as a “shining star” whose record, courage and commitment to her people would continue to speak for her.

Another supporter, Muhammad Rabiu, urged critics to focus on areas where the lawmaker could improve rather than dismissing her entire tenure.

He argued that no representative could satisfy every demand but maintained that Shittu’s interventions deserved recognition.

The renewed debate has also drawn attention to Shittu’s legislative activities, with supporters citing bills associated with her tenure, including the Kwara State Electric Power Sector Bill, 2025, Unexplained Wealth Bill, 2025, and Religious Preaching and Religious Entrepreneurship Regulation Bill, 2025.

They also highlighted motions and matters of public importance relating to issues including ritual killings, illicit drug abuse and emergency medical response.

At the constituency level, supporters pointed to interventions involving solar powered streetlights, borehole rehabilitation, educational support, youth empowerment, women and girl-child programmes, as well as assistance to traders, artisans and farmers.

The supporters have challenged critics to move the debate beyond social media comments and compare the records of Shittu and those seeking to replace her.

They argued that the appropriate questions should concern legislative output, constituency engagement, community interventions, accessibility and measurable impact.

The controversy has consequently evolved from a social media dispute into a broader political conversation about Shittu’s performance and prospects for another term.

Supporters expressed confidence that attempts to build opposition against her would fail if the contest is ultimately determined by her record and relationship with constituents.

“The people who gave her the mandate are watching, and when the time comes, they will have the final say,” one supporter said.

As political activity ahead of the next election intensifies, Shittu’s supporters are increasingly positioning her record as the central argument for continuity.

Their emerging campaign message is succinct, “One good term deserves another.”
