Group Demands Probe of NiMet’s Accuracy Claims As Kwara Farmers Lament

A leading pro-democracy group, Kwara Must Change has called for independent review of Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet)’s claim 85% forecast accuracy, describing it as false and misleading after widespread reports of failed weather predictions across Kwara State.

Earlier this week, Kwara Must Change revealed that NiMet’s 2025 forecast failed farmers in Asa Local Government.

Since then, fresh reports have emerged from farmers in Moro, Ilorin South, and other local government areas, all lamenting that NiMet’s projections did not reflect actual weather conditions.

“We relied on NiMet’s forecast to plan the farming season, but the rains and weather patterns turned out completely different,” a farmer from Moro lamented. “We have suffered huge losses.”

Speaking on the development, Abdulrazaq Hamzat, Convener of Kwara Must Change, said the agency’s failure undermines food security, frustrates farmers, and wastes public resources.

“NiMet’s 85% accuracy claim is misleading. What farmers in Kwara experienced in 2025 proves the claim is false. The agency cannot continue to boast of accuracy while farmers bear the brunt of failed projections,” Hamzat declared.

Kwara Must Change is now demanding:

1. A public withdrawal of NiMet’s false accuracy claim.

2. An independent review of its forecasting models.

3. The establishment of local forecast teams across the states to ensure weather projections reflect actual conditions on the ground.

Hamzat further emphasized the urgency of reform, noting that the lives and livelihoods of millions depend on accurate weather information. NiMet must come clean, fix its broken system, and rebuild the trust of farmers who depend on its forecasts.

With food security already under severe strain nationwide, this controversy raises urgent questions about NiMet’s credibility and its capacity to safeguard Nigeria’s agricultural future.
