By Femi Ogundele
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has vowed that those responsible for the tragic crowd surge during the Christmas funfair at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which claimed 35 lives, will face trial, regardless of their status.
Speaking at the 2025 Annual Inter-faith Service for state workers in Ibadan, Makinde emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law, stressing that justice must prevail in Oyo State.
Responding to comparisons with similar incidents in other states that went unpunished, Makinde said, “Even if nobody is held accountable elsewhere, in Oyo State, the rule of law will prevail.”
Reflecting on challenges faced in 2024, he mentioned the January 16 explosion in Bodija that impacted his office and the tragic crowd surge towards the year’s end, calling for collective efforts to prevent such incidents in the future.
Makinde assured residents that the judiciary would handle the case appropriately, stating that while bail could be granted, the accused must face trial to ensure accountability.
The governor also addressed ongoing security challenges, including bandits entering the state, and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating insecurity and protecting lives and property.
He announced plans to finalize discussions on pension reviews to align with the new minimum wage, emphasizing his administration’s dedication to worker welfare.
State leaders, including Head of Service Mrs. Olubunmi Oni and Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, praised Makinde’s efforts on security and welfare, urging him to sustain the positive momentum in 2025.
